Program: Bedrich Smetana – My Country, a cycle of symphonic poems
Performers: Semjon Byčkov (conductor) and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
Smetana’s My Country is as closely connected with the history of the Czech Philharmonic as perhaps no other work. When the first radio broadcast of a concert took place on 11 May 1925, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra played My Country. Four years later, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra recorded this beautiful composition with Václav Talich for His Master’s Voice as its first record. During World War II, Talich included the whole work on the program of concerts of the Czech Philharmonic in Berlin and Dresden, thus lifting the ban for Prague. A legendary recording of a concert from the National Theatre in 1939, at the end of which the audience spontaneously started to sing the national anthem, was released eight years ago by Supraphon. Since 1952 My Country has been performed as an opening of the Prague Spring International Music Festival on 12 May, the anniversary of the death of the author Bedřich Smetana (1824 – 1884). The cycles consist of six symphonic poems (Vyšehrad, Vltava, Šárka, Tábor, Blaník, and From Bohemia’s woods and fields) focused on the topic of Bohemian legends.
My Country has to be one of the principal repertoires of every chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic and its performance in the Rudolfinum concert hall is always an extraordinary experience for foreign artists. Semjon Byčkov has been preparing for these subscription concerts since last year and has already performed My Country with orchestras in Munich, Cologne, Hamburg, Madrid, Amsterdam, and Cleveland.

Performers: Tomáš BRAUNER (conductor), Michal KAŇKA (cello), Prague Symphony Orchestra
Tomáš Brauner ‘grew up’ with Joseph Haydn, Antonín Dvořák, and Bohuslav Martinů. Haydn and Dvořák strongly inspired Bohuslav Martinů, whose important jubilee is this year. The list of performers was extended with an invitation of the brilliant cellist Michal Kaňka, who has been focusing on Martinů’s Concerto all his professional life. The program will culminate with Dvořák’s English Symphony, which is linked to Martinů’s First Cello Concerto not only thanks to its bright peaceful character but also with its performance history. When, in 1940, its famous dedicatee Pierre Fournier performed the Concerto, it appeared regularly on the program with Dvořák’s Op. 88.
